SMALL SPACES, BIG PERSONALITY

Following the recent reveal in LA Times, I want to take a closer look at a pair of closets we completed that really pack a punch when it comes to personal flair! Hopefully this inspires you to take a look at your own home, and you find some inspiration to inject your style in new ways. We could all use a little #closetinspo these days!

We were brought on early in this project, as the clients began a major undertaking, restoring and renovating a quintessential A. Quincy Jones home in the hills overlooking LA. Their number one priority was to maintain the integrity of the mid-centrury bones. However, as avid art collectors and busy professionals, the couple needed a home that would serve their modern lifestyle. These clients are always hosting parties and events, opening up their home, and wanted an interior (and closets) that would showcase their collection of creative pieces and reflect their respective personalities!

The couple’s museum-worthy collection of American art is perhaps matched by Cindy’s curated collection of one-of-a-kind accessories! With such an artful assortment, she wanted a place that would allow her to enjoy (and properly care for) the pieces she loves. Because we were limited with space, it was so important that the design be very open and efficient. This modern approach matches the mid-century aesthetic of the home, while giving Cindy room to play and merchandise with all of her pieces.

The pitched ceilings provided a unique challenge, but in the end, we were able to outfit open shelves that showcase the more sculptural pieces she is using less frequently. Floor-to-ceiling LED panels give a heavenly glow to the shoe display, which is the real show-stopper. At the bureau, we included a custom hand-painted wallpaper which injects one of Cindy’s favorite elements — the butterflies!

The entire closet is a satin white finish, making for a very clean backdrop for all of the bold and colorful pieces. In doing so, the space really complements her collection and allows it to take center stage.

Just down the hall, Neville’s urban cowboy closet is a quiet respite. His direction was simple — as a busy entertainment attorney and a weekend rancher, he wanted a place that could marry these two sides of his personality, and provide a comfortable place to land after a long day at the office.

The resulting space is equal parts tailored / professional and relaxed / rustic. His collection was very neutral in palette, made up of the expected menswear staples (blazers, shirts, and dress shoes) as well as his weekend wear (cowboy boots, Stetson hats, and plenty of jeans). This helps to streamline the process of getting ready for a busy professional, as you can grab any two pieces in the closet, and there’s a pretty good chance you’ll have a polished / put-together outfit!

The closet is very open and modern, with clean continuous lines. This is balanced with a more textured stained wood finish. (Again, equal parts modern / rustic!) All the hanging is kept at eye-level, making it easy for him to see what he has, and put together a look. Modern lighting and matte black hardware create a boutique feeling for the space, and accentuate the retro architectural character of the home. A patterned Southwest-inspired rug is the perfect piece to finish off the closet, introducing the cowboy-at-heart, and giving a soft reminder of his peaceful pastime even on the busiest of workdays!
