DESIGNING FOR FALL

Fall Closets Are for Layering — and That Means More Storage

There’s something about the first crisp breeze of September that shifts the way we dress — and the way our closets need to function.

Fall fashion doesn’t just change the palette — it adds weight: thicker knits, longer silhouettes, tall boots, more layers. All of which take up more space. So while you’re swapping linen for cashmere and sandals for suede, it might be time to reimagine how your closet supports the season.

Let’s talk about what your closet should be doing for fall you:

1. Layered Storage for Layered Dressing

Summer closets are all about minimalism. Fall closets? Not so much.

This is when double-hang rods make room for longer hanging (think coats, sweater dresses, trench coats). We’re also adding pull-out scarf cabinets, hat hooks, and deeper drawers for seasonal layering pieces. If it takes longer to get dressed, it should take less time to find what you need.

2. Boot Storage Becomes a Priority

Ankle boots, riding boots, knee-highs — they all need proper support.

We often add:

  • Pull-out boot shelves to catch any fall mud or salt

  • Hanging rods for boots to sit upright on boot trees

  • Even hidden storage for care items like towels and suede / leather products

This isn’t your entry closet — this is where the good boots go.

3. Sweater Drawers that Actually Work

We love a good chunky knit — but they’re heavy, they stretch, and they need to breathe.

Glass-faced drawers with suede lining, cedar inserts, and soft-close glides let your knits stay folded and fresh. Even better? Adjustable shelf dividers so your cable knits don’t swallow your cashmere.

4. Accessories Need Homes Too

Fall accessories tend to multiply: gloves, beanies, wool scarves, umbrellas.

We recommend:

  • A shallow upper drawer for warm-weather accessories

  • Hidden seasonal storage behind full-length mirrors

  • And yes — a labeled system. You’ll thank yourself in February.

Fall Is a Mood — Your Closet Should Match

Beyond function, fall is also about feeling: cozy textures, moody lighting, a place to land at the end of the day.

Consider dimmable warm-tone LEDs, boucle bench cushions, or even a built-in bureau nook for a scented candle.

Your closet shouldn’t be stuck in summer. Let’s design for the season you’re actually dressing for.
