A Tale of Two Closets
His & Hers in the Garden District
In one of New Orleans’ most iconic Garden District homes, we were brought in to reimagine a traditional primary suite layout for a young couple with a modern lifestyle. The goal? Convert an underutilized sitting room into dual dressing rooms that felt luxurious, personal, and high-functioning—without compromising the elegance of the historic architecture.
The result is a His & Hers closet transformation that’s equal parts timeless and tailored.
From Sitting Room to Statement Closets
Working within the bones of a 19th-century home meant leaning into the drama of tall ceilings, ornate moldings, and large windows—while layering in contemporary function through lighting, layout, and finishes. The sitting room off the primary bedroom was split into two distinct spaces: one for her, one for him. Each closet is customized to the client’s daily rituals, wardrobe needs, and personal style.
His Closet: Structured, Streamlined, and Personal
The His closet balances utilitarian storage with thoughtful design:
Custom hat shelves run across the upper walls, displaying a colorful collection of baseball caps like art.
A ladder system maximizes vertical storage, with seasonal items stashed up top.
Tailoring gets pride of place: jackets, suiting, and shirts are organized by type and tone, with LED-lit hanging rods for full visibility.
Lower drawers provide ample space for tees, trousers, and accessories, while a dedicated drawer features velvet-lined compartments for ties, each rolled and sorted with care.
Luggage and shoes have dedicated zones—yes, even the sneakers got their own backlit moment.
Her Closet: Boutique Luxury Meets Everyday Function
The Hers closet feels like stepping into a private atelier:
A large central island with brass pulls anchors the room and offers over 20 drawers of concealed storage.
Shoe walls line one side—with a custom mirror back. From platforms to boots, everything has a home.
Garments are grouped in elegant built-ins with integrated lighting and custom rods.
A cozy coffee corner nods to slow mornings and intentional dressing.
The space is capped with a show-stopping pendant light and floral ceiling medallion, blending old and new in the most effortless way.
Design Details We Love
Exaggerated custom cabinetry designed to respect the ceiling heights and window placements
Elegant ladder rails in both spaces—making storage beautiful and accessible
Rich wood tones paired with white lacquered finishes for contrast between His and Hers
Soft seating in both closets for comfort, intention, and a hint of boutique hospitality
This transformation is a perfect example of how rethinking layout can dramatically shift how a home functions. What was once an overlooked sitting room is now a pair of high-performance, deeply personal spaces that support how this couple lives today—and for years to come.
