From Closet to Court
There are few summer style moments more iconic than Wimbledon. The crisp whites. The manicured green. The sense of tradition. The ritual of preparation.
And while the tournament is, of course, about tennis, the world around it has always been about something more: discipline, polish, performance, and presentation. Which got us thinking about a very specific kind of wardrobe space — one designed not only for clothing, but for the rituals that surround an active, elegant life. A tennis-inspired closet is part dressing room, part equipment archive, part summer headquarters. It is where whites, rackets, shoes, visors, towels, sunglasses, SPF, water bottles, and post-match layers all have a place. Not a mudroom. Not a gym closet. Not simply sports storage. A wardrobe for the sport of dressing well.
Dressing for the Ritual
The best closets are designed around the way someone actually lives. A tennis player does not simply “grab an outfit.” There are layers to the ritual: the dress or polo, the skirt or shorts, the sweater, the socks, the shoes, the visor, the racket, the towel, the water bottle, the bag.
When these items are scattered between the closet, laundry room, garage, and car trunk, the ritual becomes friction. When they are beautifully organized in one dedicated space, it becomes a pleasure.
A court-ready closet brings that sense of preparation into focus. Open hanging for tennis dresses and polos. Divided drawers for skirts, shorts, socks, and performance layers. Pull-out trays for visors, sunglasses, jewelry, and watches. A place for every piece of the uniform, whether headed to Centre Court or simply the neighborhood club.
The Tennis Whites Zone
There is something undeniably luxurious about an all-white wardrobe moment. Tennis whites feel crisp, disciplined, and timeless — but they also require care.
A dedicated whites zone can be both beautiful and functional: breathable hanging sections for dresses, shirts, and warm-up jackets; drawers lined for delicate knits and pleated skirts; and separated storage for freshly laundered pieces versus post-match items.
For a more elevated approach, we love the idea of a slim valet rod for staging the full look before leaving: dress, sweater, visor, bag, and racket. It turns getting ready into a small ceremony.
Rackets as Display
Sports equipment does not have to be hidden. In the right setting, it becomes sculptural.
Imagine a vertical racket wall with custom leather-wrapped pegs, open shelving for vintage wooden rackets, or a narrow cabinet designed specifically for modern tennis and pickleball gear. A drawer below could hold grip tape, extra strings, balls, wristbands, and towels.
This is where the tennis closet becomes more than storage. It becomes a personal archive of the sport itself.
Shoes, Properly Considered
Athletic shoes are often the hardest-working and least-considered pieces in the wardrobe. For a tennis-inspired closet, they deserve their own system.
Ventilated cubbies, pull-out shoe shelves, and divided storage can separate court shoes from casual sneakers, clean post-match slides, and travel pairs. A lower shelf or hidden tray can hold a shoe brush, deodorizing inserts, or protective bags.
The goal is not to overcomplicate. It is to make even the most practical pieces feel considered.
The Court Bag Moment
Every ritual has its carryall. For tennis, it may be a racket bag. For summer weekends, a canvas tote. For the pool, a woven basket. For travel, a soft duffel.
A court-ready closet should make room for these pieces in a way that feels intentional. Open shelving can display woven totes and leather bags beautifully, while deeper cubbies can house structured racket bags, weekenders, and larger sport bags.
Nearby, a small accessory drawer becomes the “before-you-leave” station: sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, keys, watch, towel, and water bottle. Everything needed for the day, gathered in one polished place.
Designed for the Active Life
While Wimbledon gives us the inspiration, the idea extends beyond tennis alone.
This type of closet can be designed for pickleball, golf, equestrian weekends, sailing, skiing, hiking, travel, wellness, or simply a life that moves between sport, leisure, and entertaining. It is a space for the hobbies and rituals that deserve more than a bin in the garage.
Think of it as a wardrobe for the active life — interpreted through the lens of luxury design.
The Palette
The design language practically writes itself: tennis white, grass green, navy piping, warm oak, polished nickel, saddle leather, woven textures, and crisp linen. There is room for tradition, but also for restraint.
Cabinetry could be classic and tailored, with open shelving for display and closed storage for everything less photogenic. A grasscloth wallcovering, striped bench cushion, framed vintage tournament poster, or monogrammed towel stack could bring in just enough nostalgia without feeling themed.
The best version of this space is not a costume. It is an atmosphere.
Game, Set, Wardrobe
What we love about the sport of dressing well is that it recognizes something true: the way we dress for leisure can be just as ritualized, expressive, and personal as the way we dress for an evening out.
A great closet does not simply store what you own. It supports who you are, what you do, and how you move through the day.
So whether it is tennis whites before a match, a sweater before an early morning round, or a perfectly packed tote for a summer afternoon, this is the kind of space that turns preparation into pleasure.
