CREATIVE CLOSET RODS

Hanging rods may seem like one of those closet essentials that is strictly functional, and even uninspiring; but, I have news for you...hanging rods are one of the closet’s most dynamic elements! From the finish to the shape and beyond, hanging rods can be real closet heroes.

I’ve always thought the best closet rod inspiration comes from your favorite retailers. They often challenge the norm by using fabrics (I've seen leather!), striking colors and finishes, and various shapes that all create a unique shopping experience. Last year, Chanel created a pop-up in St. Tropez and designed a ceiling-suspended black hanging rod grid. The result was architectural and felt like an art exhibit. Balenciaga’s New York flagship store took an industrial take on rods, placing merchandise on aluminum foil-covered ceiling rods on warehouse conveyor rails. Dover Street Market, which opened last year in Los Angeles, has some of the most inventive hanging rods I’ve seen. Each designer is represented as an installation and store-in-store concept, so there’s a diverse range of rods -- from spherical shaped to cages to acrylic boxes.

noah-0052-1.jpg

Recreating hanging rods like these in a home closet may not always be possible; but, there are plenty of imaginative iterations. While some clients certainly want a traditional look when it comes to displaying their wardrobe (think built-in round chrome rods), more and more are willing to take risks and embrace design-driven rods. That often means playing with color -- bronze, rose gold, brass, matte black and acrylic rods give spaces a stylish pop and that reflect the owner's personal style. Beyond color, shape is another way to get creative with rods. U-shaped rods are popular with those who want to bring a boutique experience to their space. I implemented ceiling-suspended brass rods in my recently revealed closet, which adds a sophisticated sensibility to the space. Wall-mounted rods, like the ones I installed in Jessi Malay’s dressing room, are a great way to show off certain pieces or merchandise looks.

Hanging rods have really evolved over the years, beyond aesthetics.  LED rods are the ultimate high-tech rod, helping to illuminate your garments while also looking sleek. (You can now shop custom LED rods from us in the online boutique!) For closets with tricky corners, corner rods are a smart solution that can fit your mold to your closet's curves and add additional hanging space. Mobile rods that move up and down with the press of a button are a great option for smaller spaces that have height but not width expansion. Other options for hanging storage solutions are this innovative double hang closet rod, this contemporary clothing rack, and this clever spiral display.

DESIGNING FOR DAD

Sorry ladies, today's post is for the guys. Happy Father’s Day to the dads! If you’re like many, your dad duties will be honored this weekend with a new wardrobe addition. After all, you’re not a regular dad, you’re a cool dad! Whether you unwrap a belt, hat, pair of sunglasses, tech toy, tie, or watch come Sunday, you’ll need to find the perfect place in your closet to proudly display and store your new Father’s Day fashion.

IMG_0005-1.JPG

Belts

Most men can get away with just a few belts in their wardrobe; but, if you find you’re running out of space to store them, it might be time to invest in a mounted belt rack, which can hold several. A belt rack allows you to easily see your inventory and also keeps belts in ideal waist-wearing shape. Another storage option is a drawer insert with designated dividers that create pockets to accommodate coiled belts. Placing belts in a drawer not only protects them and prevents scratches, it’s easy to organize them by color or occasion.

IMG_0013-1.JPG

Hats

With baseball season in full swing (go Dodgers!), perhaps you scored a new ball cap for Dad’s Day. The best way to store your favorite baseball hats is to fold them in half so the back tucks into the brim, and stack in a drawer or on a shelf, tightly pressed up against the one behind it. Alternatively, if your closet has empty wall space, you can hang hats on hooks like an art display!

IMG_0004-1.JPG

Sunglasses

Finally got those Ray-Bans you’ve been eyeing? Storing shades properly is critical for maximizing their longevity. Since they’re delicate, I recommend storing them in display boxes, pull-out glass displays, or acrylic vanity trays to avoid potential damage. Custom suede drawer inserts are another way to care for your favorite designer spectacles. LA Closet Design can create personalized inserts in a range of colors and fabrics. Other sunglass storage solutions include a L.E.D. optical display, a rotating chrome display rack, and a sunglass box organizer.

IMG_0008-1.JPG

Tech

Lucky enough to get some new tech this Father’s Day? Well, you'll be glad to know your closet can be enhanced to accommodate charging outlets built into cabinet drawers. Now, you won’t have to be too far from your new tech toy while getting ready for the day!

Ties

One of the most timeless go-to gifts for Dad is a new tie. So, if you’re adding to your tie collection this Father’s Day, it’s time to think about where (and how!) you’re storing your favorite neck accessory.  I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly (think sloppily shoved in a drawer or haphazardly draped over a hanger) of tie storage. But managing tie storage doesn’t have to be tricky. One of the simplest solutions is a mounted tie rack, which keeps ties untangled and makes them easy to grab and go. Another option I’ve often incorporated is a built-in display, almost like cubbies, where ties are folded the way you’d see them showcased in a store. It’s the ultimate retail experience within your own home!

Watches

If you’re the Pops who enjoys pricey wrist candy, there are some tricks to keeping those timepieces ticking like new. Don’t always have the time to wind your watches? Invest in automatic watch winders, which not only carefully holds your watch, but also helps keep the day and time function running properly. Custom pull-outs with pads to wrap your watches around can fit in a drawer or, for more expensive timepieces, sized for a safe. Lastly, if you’re a devoted collector, I suggest investing in a humidor, which provides optimal temperature control..how cool is that?!

CLOSETS WHERE YOU'LL WANT TO SPEND THE LONG WEEKEND

While many jet set or road trip for Memorial Day weekend, I’m dreaming up closets where I’d want to spend a long, leisurely three-day weekend. From playing dress up with designer duds to cozying up with a glass of chilled champagne to retreating with a binge-worthy show, closets can be a truly sacred space to relax, decompress and escape. So, here are few LA Closet Design projects and inspirational closets that offer all the creature comforts for an ultimate holiday weekend hideaway!

IMG_0027+3.jpg

IMG_0009 3.JPG

I recently shared some cool closet fridges for storing everything from beauty products to booze, and outside of beautiful bags and dazzling diamonds, it might be the best closet accessory out there. So, this weekend, pop some bubbly and toast your prized possessions!

IMG_0006+3.jpg
IMG_0017 3.JPG

I love adding nice, plush seating to a dressing room. It makes the space feel like its own dwelling. A glam ottoman or chaise provides the perfect place to curl up with a good book, journal or simply take time to admire your wardrobe during that extra weekend day.

One of the most popular closet requests I get, especially from men, is to design a designated space for a TV. And, when you have the luxury of time (as one does with a holiday weekend), what better way to enjoy your personal escape than by tuning into a baseball game or binge watching “Game of Thrones?”

IMG_0013 3.JPG

If you have the luxury of space, you might find even more reason to spend the long weekend lost in your own fashionable fantasy! This closet we designed for a client in Minnesota, making up a dramatic 2-story space, leaves plenty of room to lock yourself away and play with all of your favorite things, without any reason to leave. Complete with a mini fridge and coffee station, this spacious retreat has all the makings for a comfortable weekend in.

IMG_5845.JPG

When a client’s closet is located in a part of the home that offers a striking view, I like to optimize the favorable positioning with a window or door facing the vista. So, with a few extra hours to relax during a long weekend, taking in a tranquil setting sounds pretty serene.

Wellness has become such a significant part of the home and that has spilled over into the closet.  From chic vanities with spa-like amenities to stylish workout spaces,  closets are an ideal place to indulge in self-care without having to go anywhere.

CREDENZAS: A STYLISH EXTENSION OF THE CLOSET

Wardrobes, armoires and dressers are a traditional bedroom storage solution, but credenzas are another closet extension option that can dress up a space. While credenzas are most often seen in living and dining areas, they’re proving to be popular organizing piece in the closet or bedroom.

The angular furniture piece dates back to the Renaissance era and has transcended centuries and aesthetics. As functional as it is fashionable, credenzas are timeless additions to nearly every room in the house. Here are few striking options that could be a continuation of the closets in your home!

Mid-Century Makes a Comeback -- Credenzas were popular in the mid-1900s, as closets and storage spaces were much smaller. Today, as mid-century design makes a pervasive return, minimal wood credenzas are a common storage staple.

Earthly Delights -- Incorporating natural materials like stone, marble and leather are a great way to bring nature into the bedroom and these credenzas are sure to add a rustic layer to the space

A Touch of Metallic -- Credenzas get a glam upgrade with metallic hardware like handles, feet or doors. Whether adorned with bronze, gold or silver accents, a metallic credenza is a classic, yet modern way to elevate your space.

Pops of Print & Color -- Want to make a statement in your space? A colorful or printed credenza can add a playful pop that will make your space anything but traditional.

TREND SPOTLIGHT: OMBRE

Fashion’s biggest night took NYC by storm this week as the Metropolitan Museum of Art celebrated its annual Vogue soirée, the Costume Institute Met Gala. This year’s theme, “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” celebrated Susan Sontag's 1964 essay that defines camp as "love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration."  Designers decked out celebrities, athletes and tastemakers in bold, eclectic, over-the-top fashions that were some of the most daring the decades-long event has ever seen.

Katy-Perry.jpg
lady-gaga-met-gala-2019-camp.jpg

The pink carpet (a thematic shift from the traditionally red entry), served as a runway for feathered frocks, colorful confections and playful props that made the iconic star-studded stairs feel more like a Broadway stage than an art and fashion festivity. The internet is still abuzz about Lady Gaga’s multi-look strip down courtesy of Brandon Maxwell, Cardi B’s head-to-toe ruby red Thom Browne ensemble and Katy Perry’s Jeremy Scott getup -- chandelier and all.

victoriacristinamet1z-z.jpg

Whimsical looks aside, the Met Gala saw plenty of glamorous couture showstoppers. One of my favorite trends of the nights was ombré. Twins Victoria and Cristina Iglesias donned ethereal ombré watercolor feathered Oscar de la Renta dresses while Kylie and Kendall Jenner were also on the “birds of a feather flock together” train with their feathered ombré Versace gowns in purple and orange, respectively. Priyanka Chopra’s Dior dress boasted a rainbow skirt and cape adorned with handmade tulle ombré “feathers.” Guys embraced the ombré trend, too, as exemplified by Henry Golding who rocked a purple and blue metallic ombré Versace suit.

Ombré isn’t just reserved for fashion’s biggest night. All these over-the-top ombré looks have me thinking about ways to bring the creative use of color into the home! The trend is trickling into today’s home decor, and one of my current favorite ombré projects is Adam Hunter X Studioart collaboration, which recently released an ombré leather wall covering collection that celebrates a love for color and how it is arranged.

Here are a few other eye-catching ombré pieces that can help you take a tasteful dose of the trend home with you!:

CUSTOM CREATIONS

Customization is a critical part of my job as a closet designer. Each new space I create is personalized to a client’s specific needs and way of living -- from the materials used for the framework down to the knobs on drawers -- meaning I never recreate the same closet twice. From Khloé Kardashian’s custom fitness closet to Brad Goreski’s bespoke dressing room to Olivia Culpo’s one-of-a-kind closet, they’ve each been tailored to their individual tastes and lifestyle.

As someone who truly appreciates the beauty of customization, I’m excited a few of my favorite footwear brands have limited time bespoke offerings available right now. Talk about personalization at your fingertips (err, toes!).

Amanu -- Founded by stylist Anita Patrickson, this minimalist, timeless custom sandal brand offers 10 core silhouettes, 2 leather sole options, and 5 strap materials. Whether you want a pair of snakeskin slides or suede strappy sandals, the possibilities are endless. Talk about designing your dream sandal! While the brand has a boutique in West Hollywood, they currently have a pop-up in Palisades Village until May 12.

Dior -- A newly launched personalization program from the house of Dior, ABCDior, allows clients to customize their Walk’n’Dior sneakers. Outfitted in the classic Dior Oblique canvas print in the brand’s signature burgundy or blue, you can embroider up to three letters of your choice on each shoe, which is then hand-riveted directly onto the shoe. J’adore!

The new#MyFendiColibri program allows you to fulfill your Fendi footwear fantasies by customizing the iconic shoe.  Choose from seven front toe options, three ribbon options, and two heel heights in four different finishes. For an extra bespoke touch, add up to three initials on the ribbon to create your own couture Cinderella slipper. The service will be available in LA at the Rodeo Drive boutique May 3 – 6 and online April 15 – May 26.

SUNNIES

I just returned from a whirlwind spring break trip — exploring Hong Kong and Singapore, seeing the sites, tasting the street food and living out “Crazy Rich Asians” wherever possible. So, now that spring break has come and gone, I’ve got summer in my sights. With longer, sunnier days, I’m thinking about a sunglass refresh. A summer staple, this season is all about deciding what decade you want to channel with your eyewear -- the ‘70s, ‘80s or ‘90s.

Style icons from the ‘70s like Farrah Fawcett and Bianca Jagger were experts at accessorizing with oversized, pink-hued glasses. Today, the look is still popular among the fashion set with Chloé, Linda Farrow and Sunday Somewhere are all revitalizing the retro rose-colored spectacles.

Straying from the feminine ‘70s aesthetic, the ‘80s produced Terminator-style visor glasses. And, the look has returned (I suppose we could have guessed they’d “be back”).  Gucci, Stella McCartney, and Victoria Beckham are a few of the designers putting a modern day spin on the statement-making shades.

Moving into the ‘90s, glasses shrunk significantly offering slim-framed silhouettes. The trend resurfaced last year and continues to be a fiery fad. This season designers like Ganni, Illesteva, and Miu Miu are adding a strong cat-eye to the design, making it puuurfect for trendsetters.

Whether you have a go-to set of shades or several spectacles in rotation, storing them properly ensures they always look good and stand the test of time! There are several custom storage options I like to employ for eyewear, including display boxes (for Olivia Culpo’s closet we did a cool brass one), pull-out glass displays (similar to what we did for Jaime King), as well as acrylic vanity trays. One of the most popular ways we incorporate sunglasses for our clients are with custom suede drawer inserts! Available in a wide variety of fabrics and colors, these are a great way to add personality to your closet, and care for your designer sunnies! (If you’re interested in having these made for your own space, contact us today.) There are also several storage solutions that aren’t custom including this chic L.E.D. optical display that resembles a set-up you’d see in a luxury boutique, this retail-ready rotating chrome display rack, and this affordable sunglass box organizer.

ECLECTIC ELEGANCE

Natural, organic feeling materials are dominating the decor world right now. From rattan to jute to wicker, rustic woven fibers are popping up everywhere. While the use of these materials might have formerly come across as retro beach house, today the fad modernizes luxe boho in the best possible way. Economical and easy to incorporate into your home -- from small accents like trays and baskets to large eye-catching furniture like benches and chandeliers -- natural fibers are an approachable way to have fun with decor this spring!  Here are a few ways to bring the trend into your home for Spring and Summer.

Statement Seating -- Whether a stool for your closet, bench for your entryway or chair for your living room, weaving a rattan, jute or wicker statement seat into your space adds an exciting eclectic element!

Simple Storage -- Woven baskets for blankets, pillows or magazines have long been a storage staple; now, there are so many other natural fiber storage pieces -- from cabinets to bars to vintage vanities (!!). So, don’t be afraid to step outside your storage comfort zone.

Add Accents -- Not ready to go full boho? Dip a toe in with a texturized, minimal accessory like a rattan mirror above your dresser, jute rug in your kitchen or rope picture frame on your closet island.

COOL CLOSET FRIDGES

Room temperature is so last season! Cold is officially in. The coolest trend heating up posh closets is mini refrigerators. A fridge may seem like an unlikely closet accessory, but it has many practical uses!

Often beauty products require refrigeration for longevity (and because nothing’s more refreshing than a chilled eye cream hitting your face!). Rather than keeping beauty products near the kitchen condiments (let’s face it, Crème de la Mer shouldn’t be next to the mayo), store them in your closet or vanity for easy access. The Fashion Spot has a breakdown of what products should and shouldn’t be refrigerated.

URBAN OUTFITTERS

URBAN OUTFITTERS

And, of course, a closet fridge is the optimal place to store a few snacks for those late night cravings or busy mornings that require a quick bite before rushing out the door. After all, who wants to walk all the way to the kitchen to satisfy that sweet tooth or fuel up?!

One of the “coolest” projects I worked on was Khloe Kardashian’s workout closet, in which we installed a mini fridge for her Fiji water bottles. I love the ‘grab and go’ ease of it and it makes staying hydrated top of mind first thing the morning and before bed.

walk-in-closet-mini-refrigerator.jpg
efc53a17128cd4b3964d7885ec990863.jpg

If you have a large enough closet, there’s nothing better than gathering your girlfriends in your sacred space, am I right? So, naturally, a mini-fridge filled with bubbles and your favorite refreshments is a luxury your friends will appreciate. I see no better way to bring the luxury shopping experience home than having champagne always at the ready. Heather Dubrow, a member of the Real Housewives of Orange County cast took this idea and ran with it, installing a ‘Champagne Doorbell’ in her closet, so the bubbles are always at her fingertips! Cheers to that!

To be clear, there is a closet fridge for everyone. For the client really looking to make a statement, Veuve Clicquot’s Porsche-designed champagne fridge comes fully stocked and is sure to be the focal point of any luxury man-cave or diva-den. A fabulous collector piece and guaranteed conversation starter, this stainless steel behemoth stores up to 15 bottles for a pretty penny, with a mere $70,000 price tag!

CREATIVE COLLABS

I always have my eye out for unique collaborations in fashion, home decor and design, and there are a few recent ones that have caught my attention!

1295051_2_large.jpg

Evian X Virgil Abloh -- It may seem an unlikely pairing, but sometimes the best combinations celebrate the fusion of form and function, right? Off-White’s founder Virgil Abloh, who is serving as Evian’s Creative Advisor for Sustainable Innovation Design, designed the company’s first refillable glass water bottle as part of the “One Drop can make a Rainbow” collection. Made in collaboration with beverage brand SOMA, the fashionable limited-edition glass bottle is topped with an eco-friendly bamboo lid. What a perfect addition to any workout closet?! Cheers to staying hydrated in style!

The designer is known for his bold color sensibility, and his unique ability to take fashion houses from tired to trendy! Most recently, we saw him revolutionize French fashion house Louis Vuitton, bringing the classic staple pieces of the collection into the 21st century with neon accents and iridescent accessories. It’s exciting to see that he’s continuing to think outside the box and bringing his modern art perspective to everyday items we can all enjoy.

Georg Jensen X Kelly Wearstler -- Two of the design industry’s leading brands -- Georg Jensen and Kelly Wearstler -- have joined forces to create a collection called ‘Frequency.’ The organic, minimal six-piece collection was inspired by the fluidity of water and light. The wavy-shaped steel bowls and hurricanes are the ultimate statement-making pieces that make for great closet accents!

Wearstler’s deco design approach is unmistakable in her work, and I love that she’s teamed up with an iconic maker like Georg Jensen. Now, you can add a little sculptural flair to your own home, and take inspiration from the rest of Kelly Wearstler’s forever fabulous home furnishings!

Tommy Hilfiger X Zendaya -- The legendary American designer, Tommy Hilfiger, and multi-hyphenate Hollywood starlet, Zendaya, partnered on Tommy Hilfiger’s Spring 2019 collection. The decidedly ‘70s-inspired collection, which was recently presented at Paris Fashion Week, honors the female icons that defined the era. I especially love the feminine blouses, power suits and oxblood leather accessories that all embrace the season’s trends and are available to purchase now - groovy!

Possibly the most surprising collab, Hilfiger is known for his classic Americana styling and quality denim — meanwhile Zendaya brings a fresh, youthful soul to the stylish collection and brings the designer into the present, appealing to a whole new generation of style seekers and consumers.

DIVING INTO THE OSCAR GREENROOM

oscars1.jpg

The Oscars always deliver some major fashion moments (Charlize in Dior, Constance in Atelier Versace, Julia in Elie Saab in the color of the night -- pink!, and Regina in Oscar de la Renta were a few of my personal favorites this year); but, I was especially inspired by this year’s Academy Awards’ green room.  The space was designed by Rolex, which has been imagining the ever-important room since 2016. Each year, the brand ideates a new theme, bringing it to life through design. This year, the luxury timepiece masters dove deep into the sea to create a vision around their Perpetual Planet campaign and honor their Oyster Perpetual Submariner collection.

Copy-of-RlxGreenRoom_19bm_016.jpg

Backstage, celebs were greeted by a bronzed door shaped like a hatch, which opened into a submarine-like vessel. Portholes featuring backlit images of marine life further set the sea-ne. The color palette and furniture also embraced the theme, with vibrant oceanic blue tones, wave and starfish-shaped seating, and coral-shaped laser cut-outs filling the room.

Now that nautical is on my mind, I’m starting to think about some of the spring pieces I can put on my warm-weather wish list, like these:

CUPID'S CLOSET GUIDE

Cupid’s arrow may be striking sweethearts this week, but he’s also making a love connection between me and some adorable pink, red and heart motif fashion and home decor pieces. Whether you’re still looking for a gift or are just inspired by the season like me, there's plenty of eye candy out there!

In the home design category I’ve got my (heart) eyes on everything from a shaggy pillow perfect for that pop of pink to a deep red alpaca throw blanket that looks as good as it feels to a chic pink tic-tac-toe set (because who doesn’t need that?!). I’m also loving Alexandra Von Furstenberg’s acrylic picture frame and valet tray, which are subtle ways to bring red and pink into the home.  And, of course, Closet Design Bible, has plenty of pink punches, along with timeless tips.

Meanwhile, I’m also swooning over some stylish apparel and accessory pieces. For starters, this Dolce & Gabbana lace midi dress (on sale!) is a total showstopper. Jennifer Meyer can do no wrong and her open heart gold diamond earrings have certainly stolen mine! Other fun finds that have me under a spell are a girl-power Stella McCartney pink suit, a racy red and pink Bordelle bra and seasonless red Gianvito Rossi ankle boots. Cheers to love (and finding someone who looks at you the way I look at these!).

SHOP TALK

New year, new shopping destinations? LA is ripe with new retail right now, with even more covetable shops coming as the year continues. Here are a few new and upcoming stores I have on my radar (get those credit cards ready!). Whether you’re shopping for some fashionable new accessories or for closet inspiration, these design destinations are sure to have what you’re looking for!

Dover Street Market

The ultimate shopping destination landed in LA late last year, further putting the City of Angels on the fashion map. Known as one of the most cutting-edge retail concepts in the world (other locations include Beijing, London, New York, Singapore, and Tokyo), DSM consists of store-in-store installations, unique collaborations, exclusive capsule collections, and art exhibitions making it a truly unique experience. This is the go-to shopping spot for hard-to-find fashion and items like Comme des Garçons tees, Chanel and Repossi jewelry, Gucci gear and limited-edition sneakers.

Heidi Merrick

Running through Jan. 31, 2019, Heidi Merrick, who has a flagship in Downtown LA, is debuting her first pop-up store in Malibu. The collection of cool, California pieces offers classic lines and versatile silhouettes. Her feminine designs transcend time...and freeways! The pop-up also includes art installations from Dewey Nicks and Mona Kuhn, and black surfboards shaped by her brother, Britt Merrick.

Everlane

Though an official opening date hasn’t been announced, the popular direct-to-consumer brand for elevated essentials is slated to open on Abbot Kinney sometime this year. Whenever it opens, I’ll be popping in for cozy cashmere sweaters and affordable tees.

James Veloria

The high-end resale boutique recently returned to LA with a pop-up shop at Opening Ceremony in West Hollywood. The assortment is teeming with tons of designer vintage finds, including Tom Ford-era Gucci and celebrity treasures like Madonna's look from the 1995 VMAs.

Palisades Village

It’s as if I rubbed a genie lamp, wished for all my favorite brands to come together in one walkable destination and they appeared! That’s how I feel about Palisades Village, which recently opened in Los Angeles’ Pacific Palisades neighborhood. Stores include A.L.C., Alo Yoga, Anine Bing, Cuyana, Fleur du Mal, Jennifer Meyer, Rachel Zoe, Towne by Elyse Walker, Vince, and Zimmerman, among others. I mean, does it get any better than that?! I anticipate many Saturday shopping trips here this year.

The Webster

It’s not slated to open until 2020 (sigh), but I’m counting down the days until Miami’s luxe multi-brand fashion store opens at the Beverly Center, which has undergone quite the transformation. From The Row to Loewe, Maison Margiela to Maison Michel, The Webster is always at the forefront of fashion, and I can’t wait to see what the LA flagship has to offer.

TOP TRENDS FOR 2019

As we say “goodbye” to 2018, I’m reflecting on some of the best (and worst) trends that trickled into our wardrobes and homes. The past year offered some serious design highlights (hello, cheetah and check prints for days!) along with some lowlights (looking at you “dad” sneakers). Overall, there was plenty to celebrate in the design space and I’m looking forward to seeing what 2019 has to offer. I think we’ll continue to see the pendulum swing away from dramatic minimalism towards playful patterns, mixed materials, bold colors and maximalism. Here are five of my favorite New Year design trends.

Under the Sea

This past year, we got a glimpse of how the sea is making a splash in our style with the puka shell phenomenon. From anklets to earrings and embellishments to accent pieces, both mainstream and luxury brands adopted the aquatic trend. And, the fad is predicted to continue, only being further amplified by the Pantone Color Institute naming Living Coral the “Color of the Year.” A color that represents “playful expression” and our “innate need for optimism,” Living Coral is a “coral hue with a golden undertone.” There are a multitude of ways to bring the pink-red shade into the home: those who want to dive in head first can opt for a striking rug or statement accent chair (both great ways to add color to a closet), while those who prefer to just dip their toe in can achieve the trend with a charming vase or functional wall shelf. Either way, I “sea” this trend as a fun way to add a playful pop!

Shhh! Secret Storage Solutions

I’ve long been a proponent of having concealed elements in closets if square footage permits. We’ve put scarf racks in pocket doors, hidden hampers in drawers, and created a space for ironing boards to fold up. So, I’m thrilled that hidden storage solutions are expected to be popular in 2019. This trend is actually quite timeless and easy to achieve. A few of my favorite secret storage solutions are placing drawer dividers in the dresser to help organize folded garments, adding acrylic trays to drawers to hide accessories, and incorporating belt and tie racks to streamline access. Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me!

Matte Black is the New Black

We’ve really seen it all when it comes to fixture finishes -- pewter, copper, brass, you name it. In 2019, we can expect metal fixtures to take a back seat allowing matte black to take center stage as the favorite finish. Equally edgy and elegant, matte black balances modern, timeless and industrial sensibilities while offering a fresh way to punctuate a space. Though often considered less versatile than metallic finishes, matte black can work as well with a crisp white space as it can with a muted pastel or vibrant-hued one.  Beyond the bathroom and kitchen, matte black elements -- from floating shelves to hang knobs to mirrors -- are sleek additions to a closet and vanity. In fact, testing out matte black in the closet is a great ways to decide if it’s worth investing in more costly decor like the kitchen faucet.

The Future is Bright

Statement light fixtures are predicted to illuminate spaces throughout the home in 2019. I recently shared some of my favorite closet lighting options, many of which will work well in the New Year and beyond. Boho styles like rattan chandeliers are sure to be a fashionable go-to for dining and living areas, while opulent crystal fixtures and geometric pendants will continue shining as closets’ pièce de résistance in many cases.

crystal chandeliers and pendants will always have a place in the home, and are the perfect way to elevate a glamorous dressing room.

If These Walls Could Talk

Mark my words: bold wallpaper will be exceptionally striking next year. From fearless florals to vibrant watercolors to animated animals, wallpaper is going to be huge. I’ve incorporated daring wallpaper in past projects like in Whitney Port’s closet, in which we lined one wall with the iconic Martinique banana leaf wallpaper found at the Beverly Hills Hotel. It’s a whimsical way to personalize a space and be a little playful, so a closet is the perfect place to do just that!

LET THERE BE LIGHTING!

We’re heading straight into winter, and that sadly means darker days. So, here’s a bright idea: invest in some good closet lighting so you can really see your most prized possessions! While natural light is always ideal, when there’s less daylight, it’s necessary to supplement with alternatives. And, your closet is one area you definitely shouldn't settle for bad fluorescent lighting. So, here are a few options for illuminating your closet:

Recessed -- Recessed lights are nice options for the closet as they create ambient light, dispersing it throughout the space or directing it to highlight a specific item or section. The downside is that overhead lighting may not effectively illuminate every corner of the closet. So, it’s nice to integrate other lighting, like hanging rods, to maximize radiance.  Be sure to select a color temperature bulb between 3000K and 3500K to emit a crisp, white light.

unspecified-25.jpeg
unspecified-24.jpeg

Chandeliers and Pendants -- When it comes to dressing room lighting, function doesn’t require sacrificing fashion. Not only does a statement fixture like a chic chandelier or polished pendant over an island or ottoman emanate lots of light, it creates a glamorous focal point. The “Hallie” crystal chandelier (Lamps Plus) is the perfect example of a classic crystal chandelier that can elevate any closet, modern or traditional!

Sconces -- While many closets don’t typically have a ton of blank wall space, one way to take advantage of that area if yours does is to add a sconce. It provides additional lighting and adds a captivating design element. Sconces are also one of the more economical ways to enhance your space’s luminosity.

Concealed  -- One of the more clever ways to add light sources to your dressing room is through placing them in targeted locations that can amply spotlight a specific area. I love the idea of adding LED lighted hanging rods, uplighting, in-cabinets/drawers and mirrors with a backlit frame. These options tend to be practical, energy-efficient, low-maintenance, inexpensive and effective, yet subtle.

MONSTER MANIA

Halloween is such a fun time of year -- the candy, the costumes, the celebrations. But, this year, I’m embracing the creepy, crawly season with some non-frightful high-fashion! Menacing monsters, blood-curdling bugs, spine-chilling serpents and scary skulls are all part of this season’s spooktacular style. So, here’s some inspiration to get you into the Halloween spirit...no tricks and no costumes required!

Fendi’s monsters have been woven into the house’s collections for seasons. Though they’re more sweet than sinister, they can certainly raise a few hairs. Seen on bags (often, discreetly), tees, shoes and, perhaps most notably, as bag charms and keyrings, Fendi monsters aren’t just critters that hide under our bed.

Bugs and serpents are another Halloween horror that have crawled into more everyday fashion. Alexander McQueen brings beetles to life with printed dresses and chunky jewelry, while Gucci’s snake print has slithered onto everything from bomber jackets to totes to sneakers.

Available at Just One Eye, the pieces feature everything from a quail skeleton made of 18-karat rose gold atop a tourmaline gemstone and accented with white diamonds to an 18-karat rose gold beetle medallion necklace embellished with champagne diamonds and multicolor sapphires to an 18-karat spider rose gold necklace adorned with opals which represents luck, abundance and creativity.

They may be morbid, but skulls in fashion are as timeless as they are terrifying. A signature of Alexander McQueen, the brand has made haunting hollow heads totally chic. Scarves, leather goods and apparel can’t escape the house’s trademark symbol.  360Cashmere also doesn’t shy away from skulls, adorning their cozy, cashmere sweaters with them. And, iconic housewares brand, Fornasetti, reproduces opera sensation, Lina Cavalieri’s face on everyday objects like candles and plates, giving elegant decor surreal style.

WEST SIDE COLOR STORY

As designers, inspiration can come in many forms! I often hear people say Fall is their favorite season, and we go out of our way here in SoCal to get a glimpse of the Fall colors before winter strikes. In the spirit of the changing seasons, I decided to break out a few fall colors of my own. Last week, while launching Closet Design Bible in New York, I had a chance to hit some of my favorite haunts, as well as check out a few new spots. The city is full of life and character, and what better way to pay homage to everyone’s favorite season than to draw inspiration from the vivid colors all around. And for anyone who thinks the city is nothing but gray, think again! See the full color story below:

For anyone who thought pink had no place in the fall palette, stop and smell the Café Créme! Somewhere next to nude on the color spectrum, this shade brings Cali cool to the East Coast.

Possibly the perfect go-to grey, this humble hue can go uptown modern or downright rustic depending on the application.

Don’t let the end of Summer make you blue! But if it does, make sure it’s Deep Teal. This saturated shade just goes to show how cool colors can take a rightful year-round spot in the wardrobe.

Believe it or not, grey has temperatures, too. I’m rounding our the group with a cool grey complement that embodies timeless elegance. Take it home or wear it well, Lead Crystal is a gem of a color.

WILD WILD WEST

They say everything’s bigger in Texas and now spending a few days in the Lone Star State, I can see why. Hair, houses, personalities, and of course, closets are all supersized in this statement-making southern state. I’m in the middle of my launch events for CLOSET DESIGN BIBLE, and we’re making stops in Dallas and Houston this week! I’ve also done a few Texas closet projects and it’s always exhilarating to have an opportunity to design in such grand spaces. Let’s just say gold walls and mirrored islands are just the beginning — in honor of my visit, I thought I’d share some of my favorite over-the-top Texas spaces!

It’s always nice when a client wants to take risks, and do something original! This gold glam closet we designed for one of our TX clients does not disappoint, and just goes to show that they really do it bigger in Texas!

My timing here in Texas couldn’t align better with one of the top fall trends hitting the streets: western wear.  Rodeo-ready threads like denim on denim, buckles, bolos, fringe, turquoise, rhinestones, cowhide and endless iterations of cowboy boots are making a strong statement this season.Isabel Marant, Dsquared, Alberta Ferretti, Veronica Beard, Ralph Lauren and Etro were just a few of the brands that showcased giddy-up garb in their Fall 2018 collections. Whether you’re inspired by the influence of Westworld or the need for the good ol’ all-American aesthetic, it’s time to saddle up in style.

KEEP YOUR STYLE IN CHECK

Fall is in the air! With the first day of autumn just a few days ago and October around the corner, I’m daydreaming about how I’m going to wear my warmest wardrobe pieces. One of the season’s trends I’m most looking forward to incorporating is classic fall fabrics and prints like checks, plaids, houndstooth, tweed and herringbone. These classic prints have long been a staple of handsome home decor as well, and I’m excited that they’re circling back into the closet again! Traditional English interiors and equestrian wear have taught us these prints are conservative, even masculine. But as our homes have evolved, and modern trends have taken hold, checks and plaids have been reinterpreted to add a touch of masculine warmth to any room - and now fashion is following suit (pun intended).

PLAID1.jpg

Fall 2018 runways were a mashup of men’s suiting meets grandma’s garments with designers like Balenciaga, Fendi, Michael Kors, Prada, Saint Laurent, and Versace all embracing the fall fad. Now, the trend has trickled down and we’re seeing it in every form: straight leg pants, relaxed blazers, pencil and pleated skirts, chunky knits, sleek outerwear and even shoes and bags.

What’s great about this print trend is that it’s timeless, effortless and you probably already own an item (or five) in your closet. So, whether channeling Cher Horowitz and wearing head to toe tartan, taking a page from the men’s playbook with a glen plaid double-breasted coat or iterating a more modern styling of oversized houndstooth, it’s all game.

PLAID2.jpg
PLAID4.jpg

Checks and plaids work well in the home, too, and can make it truly feel like the fall season. Try mix and matching prints and textures with throw pillows or reinterpreting a space with a new bench or chair or updating your bedding for a re-imagined sleeping space. If you’re checking into this trend for the long haul, consider a plaid tile pattern, or a statement wallpaper to warm up a room! The possibilities are as limitless as the number of lines on a tartan suit.
