DRESS UP YOUR DRAWERS!

We all know the saying “a place for everything, everything in its place”, but what if there isn’t a place for everything?! You open up a deep drawer and spend precious time digging around looking for a matching sock or untangling a knot of necklaces! One of my favorite features in our custom closets are the custom drawer inserts we do for our clients’ various accessories. These are a solution I like to recommend for a wide array of storage needs, and can work in any space! You don’t have to do a total overhaul to make your morning routine a little more enjoyable. Custom inserts can make the most of any closet, cabinet, or piece of furniture! AND with the wide selection of materials available, the inserts can look like they were always there, or you can opt for a bright color that will pop and make you smile every time you open a drawer.

If you see something you can’t live without, or have a custom inquiry, send us an email! info@laclosetdesign.com

SECRET STORAGE WEAPONS

Closets (conveniently) hold clothes. That we know. But over the years, I’ve worked with clients to turn dressing rooms into so much more than a spot to stockpile garments. From storage to safes to stripper poles, the sky’s the limit when it comes to the fun things you can conceal in a closet.

Let’s start with some of the more obvious items:

Hampers -- We’ve come a long way from the days of plastic floor hampers. Today, hampers come in all shapes and sizes. And, with functional design, they can easily be concealed in a pull-out cabinet, retracting as if it's not even there. Don’t let dirty duds compromise your dressing room’s mojo!

PULL-OUT CABINETS -- IT MAY SEEM LIKE A SIMPLE SOLUTION, BUT A PULL-OUT CABINET CAN BE A CREATIVE WAY TO STORE ANY COLLECTION WITHOUT EATING UP VALUABLE REAL ESTATE IN THE CLOSET!

Safes -- Safes in closets aren’t new; but they’ve really evolved in terms OF design and technology (hello, biometric entry). Now, you can store your pricey pieces in stylish, state-of-the-art safes that blend seamlessly into your dressing room. (Courtesy of brown safe)

Ironing boards -- Ironing boards are bulky (and, not the most attractive piece of equipment). But, if you have the space, a pull-out ironing board that tucks away is a great option to keep your closet looking crisp . Besides, where better to iron your garments than in your closet?

A few of the more innovative items:

Jewelry cabinets -- I love helping clients finds ways to store jewelry in their closet. Whether a pullout drawer with custom inserts or a standing cabinet with hooks, there are a multitude of creative ways to store and conceal bling beyond the typical box.

Washer/dryer -- Washer/dryer hookups aren’t typically installed in a dressing room, but for those designing a home or closet from the ground up, this can be a great way to keep the space streamlined and the flow of the home clean.

Lastly, some of the most inventive:

Stripper pole -- Yes, you read that correctly. For clients who want to make their closet a little more risqué -- whether a stripper pole or wet bar -- we’ve made it happen. Whatever your fancy (or fantasy!) nothing’s impossible.

Safe room / panic room -- Whether dodging a tornado, robber or zombie (eeek!), some of today’s most advanced closets offer secret safe rooms. This Pacific Palisades pad has a safe room that can double as a seasonal closet. Obsessed!

DESIGNER'S DREAM

Some thought the day would never come! I recently began the process of designing my own dream dressing room in my Los Angeles home. When you start designing a space for yourself, the endless options and various design directions are so overwhelming! I wanted the space to be perfect - a little experimental (since I can play with the design in ways my clients might not always allow), while still embodying my own personal style! Minimal, curated, but still comfortable and highly functional.

1.jpg

SIMPLE, CHIC, FEMININE

My goal was to create a space that blends seamlessly with my own personal style, and reflects the items in my wardrobe! While I often incorporate colorful accessories and edgy pieces in my wardrobe, at the end of the day I'm always drawn to the modern, flirty, feminine cuts and color palettes.

2.jpg

CREATING THE PERFECT COLOR

I'm searching for something special! While the classic white closet can never go out of style, I'm hoping to warm up the room with a new color - one I'm working to create with Portola Paints!

3.jpg

MIXING METALS

Just like in assembling a look, I'm not afraid to mix metals, and I think it's a modern way to bring a touch of glam into an already polished space!

4.jpg

HIGH CONTRAST: HARD LINES AND SOFT HUES

Designing a boutique space is all about balance! I want to blend minimal geometric forms with fun and fashionable materials to really soften up the look.

5.jpg

DREAMY DETAILS

We all know no good detail goes unnoticed in the closet! My dressing room design calls for all kinds of luxe details - both functional and fashionable!

HOW TO SPEND MOTHER'S DAY IN LA

Spring in LA is in full swing, and Mother's Day is just around the corner!

When I'm not drowning in dressing room madness and helping my clients get their closets in order, I am on full-time Mom duty! While fashion and furniture might get me fired up, nothing fulfills me like spending time with my son. Whether it's a weekend away or a casual afternoon around town, I love any opportunity to see the world through the Kai's eyes. He keeps me young, and keeps me laughing!

In anticipation of Mother's Day, these are a few of my all-time favorite ways to wind down as a family! Wether you're looking for a foodie outing or a fun-filled sports day, these are the little moments that make being a mother so special.

GAME DAY:

Nothing says quality time to me like a high-energy game of basketball, cheering on Kai at one of his games (He's been playing since he was 6!), or sharing a spot in the stands with him at the Staples Center to watch the Clippers or Lakers!

MUSEUM DAY:

If you're in the mood for a more mellow Moms' day, you can't beat a nice brunch and a day at the Broad. Soak up some culture at LA's newest modern art museum, then head next door for some Californian cuisine at Otium!

LAZY LA DAY:

Family time doesn't have to mean leaving the neighborhood. With Mother's Day falling on a Sunday this year, it's the perfect opportunity to stroll through the Studio City Farmer's Market! Mama Musubi's rice balls are always a hit, and who doesn't to snack while they shop on a Spring day in LA?!

BOUTIQUE ON A BUDGET

IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T HEARD...

Closed Design Bible is here! In a recent segment with Home + Family, which aired on the Hallmark channel, I broke down some of LACD's best-loved closets with a few simple takeaway tips for the viewers at home. Here are a few of my favorite upgrades from the book that will take any closet from drab to fab!

HANGING BOOT TREES

Tall boots are tricky, and these handy hangers take all the leg work out of finding a storage solution! Adjustable to any boot size, they're easy to use, and can hang on any standard closet rod.

TIERED PANT HANGER

Take back valuable hanging space by consolidating your slacks, scarves, and ties! Instead of one pair of pants per hanger, you can layer multiple to free up space!

FOLDING VALET HOOK

The secret weapon for any well-functioning wardrobe - this great little gadget can be easily fitted anywhere in the closet (or your house for that matter!) to temporarily store dry-cleaning, style your looks, or stage pieces for packing!

ACRYLIC SHELF DIVIDERS

No more slouchy bags and toppling stacks of tees! Use these dividers to keep items on your shelves in perfect order.

CRYSTAL KNOBS

Hardware is the first step toward a more merchandised closet! It's such a simple upgrade, and immediately elevates your space, adding a touch of custom detail.

SLIMLINE ACRYLIC HANGERS

The velvet slimline hanger has become a staple for those looking to maximize storage in small spaces. Now it's getting a facelift, with a fresh take on that same familiar design, in a trendier acrylic body, with rose-gold hardware! Equally functional, this is the perfect way to achieve that boutique look on a budget.

SIMPLY SPRING

After my recent visit to the SIMPLY NYC conference, I decided to team up with them and put together some timely organization tips! With today being the first day of Spring, what better way to welcome the new season with a fresh and functional wardrobe?!

Check out the tips below, and be sure to head over to the SIMPLY blog as well for more great content!

ondisplay.jpg

Whether you loathe or celebrate spring cleaning, there’s no denying now is the ideal time of year to reset and reorganize (and kick those winter blues to the curb). Just as spring represents a rebirth in nature, so too does it invite a regeneration in the home. And, decluttering your closet is a great place to start the spring cleaning process.

PURGE LIKE A PRO

purge1.jpg

OK, deep breaths! Purging takes some patience but is oh-so-rewarding. Look at each item in your closet and ask yourself if you’ve worn it in the past year, if it fits, and if it’s still in style. If the answer to any of these is “no” it’s time to let it go.

Make three piles: one for selling (sites like Tradesy and The RealReal are great for designer duds), one for donating, and one for trash. Now start to visualize the new spring styles you can buy with all that extra closet space. My motto is purge the pieces you don’t love, and invest in maintaining the ones you do!

SYSTEMIZE + SORT

systemize1.jpg

Decide on an organization system that works for you. Think about your process when you’re getting dressed: What do you think about first? Garment type? Occasion? Color? Arrange your closet in a way that is logical and reflects your lifestyle.

That may mean hanging your tops from lightest to darkest color, or sorting your dresses by category like casual, professional, and party. Whatever you decide, make sure the system fits your daily routine so you’re not wasting time looking for your favorite items.

ON DISPLAY

ondisplay9.jpg

Once you’ve purged and established an organizational system, decide how you want to display your pieces. Use the same hangers throughout your entire wardrobe (I love these rose gold ones for a chic space-saving and cohesive look) and use designated hangers for items like belts and scarves to maximize space. Another display tip is to use shelf dividers for smaller accessories like clutch bags to keep them from getting lost and damaged. Lastly, use accessory trays for daily essentials like keysclutchessunnies and watches.

BUILT TO LAST

buildtolast3.JPG

Preservation, especially of pricy pieces, is so important. I suggest using clothing filers to keep folded items like tees neatly tucked away and easily accessible. As you pack away boots for the season, but sure to fill them to help them keep their shape. Boot trees are a great option if you have the space. For handbags, I recommend inserting purse pillows so they maintain their structure and to keep them sitting pretty on the shelf, or purse hooks to ensure large slouchy totes hang neatly.

FINAL TOUCH

overall.jpg

Finally, give your space a mini-makeover by adding an accent like a new photo, decorative mirror or cute plant. A small seasonal change can have a big impact!

Entertaining Al Fresco

Last week, amid the holiday buzz, I celebrated my birthday in true LA fashion, with an outdoor December dinner party! Although we are in the dead of winter, the tablescape has me itching for spring, with florals from The Empty Vase, as well as marble and blush place settings (via Casa de Perrin).

I hope this holiday season was filled with fun, laughter, and times spent with those you love!

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

The New Year is the perfect time to whip your wardrobe into shape!

closet.jpg

As we're all considering resolutions, and looking to make the most of the year to come, our closets have a huge impact on our daily stress and productivity. What better way to hit the ground running in 2018 than with a much-needed closet purge?! Make room in your life for next year's trends with a few of these simple tips.

Lisa-Adams_LA-Closet-Fitness-Passion_3.jpg.rend.hgtvcom.966.644.jpeg

Pro-Tip 1: Wine + Playlist

Power down the phone and put on your favorite motivational playlist! It's time to get in the zone so you can make quick decisions.

Pro-Tip 2: Use Three Hampers

  • Sell - Items you love, but no longer wear and want to get a return from!

  • Donate - Business appropriate, tailored items in good condition for charitable organizations!

  • Trash - Anything with stains, holes, or irreparable damage.

Pro-Tip 3: Have a System

Break down your wardrobe into more manageable sections before tackling the overwhelming task! Maybe you have an area where you keep trendier pieces or recent purchases for quick and easy staging. Try assembling looks with these pieces as you're pulling items from your closet! There could be pieces you're already struggling to wear, in which case this is a good time to take action. Either you make the effort to have fun with these pieces in the new year, or it's time to toss and make room for pieces you'll actually enjoy wearing.

closet.jpg
closet.jpg

Pro-Tip 4: Be Decisive

"Yes!" "No!" ... "Maybe" is not an option!

Pro-Tip 5: Be Consistent

Resolve to repeat this process regularly in 2018, and keep a hamper in your closet for donations, items that need to be tailored, etc. This will help you get in the routine of a year-round purge and avoid the overwhelming seasonal task!

To see these tips in action, see TV personality Maria Menounos tackling the task in her own space!

LAST-MINUTE STOCKING STUFFERS

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO LAST-MINUTE STOCKING STUFFERS

We're one week away, and the last-minute gift list is growing! Sometimes the best gifts in life aren’t the ones that cost a lot or come in a large box; they’re the ones that show you pay attention to someone’s interests and routines. We all know that person who loves a glass of wine or craves a good workout, so why not give them something you know they’ll appreciate?

Here are a few practical ideas that won’t break the bank.

For the Co-Worker:

This year, I made the decision to lose the case and set my phone free! This little accessory has been a life-saver, giving the perfect grip for the naked phone, as well as functioning as a retractable stand and fidget-friendly toy. This is the perfect last-minute find for the busy professional who always has their phone in hand - or anyone for that matter!

DESIGNING FOR 2018

New Year, New Design Trends

This year brought us plenty of fun design trends -- from millennial pink to global Gucci domination and velvet everything. So, what does 2018 have in store? We know the Pantone “Color of the Year” is ultraviolet, so expect purple to be pervasive in fashion and home design. Beyond the hot hue, there are several other design trends we can expect. Here are a few of the ones I’m most excited about:

Nordic Knows Best -- Scandinavian-inspired designs offer a quiet respite and represent the bridge between ultimate efficiency and luxury. Expect to see streamlined sophistication (think solid monochromatic rooms, storage as decor and light wood materials).

Pattern Play -- Patterns and rich textures in a range of color schemes -- from soft neutrals to bold shades -- will bring more dimension and whimsy to fashion and interior spaces.

Shared Closets -- As fashion moves toward embracing unisex sensibilities, so do closet spaces. With streamlined design elements, an overlap of masculine and feminine aesthetics and simple, natural finishes, couples can comfortably share a space without sacrificing personal style.

Space Remix -- With more millennials entering the housing market, homes will become more flexible and multi-functional, challenging the conventional notion of “rooms.” We will continue to see spaces, along with closets, adapt to this more informal, multi-use lifestyle.

Staging Areas -- As social media becomes an increasingly present part of our style choices, staging areas need to not only function well for creating looks, but must also serve as beautifully designed spaces to showcase new looks (#OOTD).

CLOSET CALCULATIONS

Hanging Heights + Drawer Depths = a Well Calculated Closet

Designing closets may seem glamorous, but truth be told there’s plenty of work that goes into them, including measuring and calculating things like the appropriate hanging heights and drawer depths. I’m fortunate that my education has greatly helped me in this industry, especially when it comes to the numbers. Creating closets requires calculations...lots of calculations. So, I wanted to share a few industry secrets about how to maximize your closet by using proper measurements.

STACKING ITEMS

To ensure items don’t getting lost in the bottom of a pile, don’t stack items more than six deep! The moment they're starting to creep above six, it's time to start a new stack.

2.jpg
La-closet-design-jeans-bar.jpg

DRAWER DEPTHS

The shallower the drawers, the easier it is to see everything at first glance -- and who doesn’t want that?! If drawers are too deep, things are likely to get lost in the bottom of the drawer; and if you can't find it, you won't wear it.

La-closet-design-jaime-king-2.jpg

HANGING DEPTHS

I try to maintain hanging depths of 24" in all my clients' closets. Anything more and you risk not being able to see everything. Anything less and it will feel cramped, and hangers stick out past the cabinets.

closet.jpg

BUREAU HEIGHTS

Often, these trusty storage space are too high or too low! Aim for waist high if you want to use them most effectively.

main.original.640x0c.jpg

INDIVIDUAL HANGING HEIGHTS

Always hang items at an appropriate reach height. Rods should be placed according to the size of that actual clothing, as well as your individual reach. This obviously depends on your height, so be sure to measure what’s most comfortable for you!

TIP: Measure from the floor to the base of the hanger to determine how high to place your top hanging rod, where you can still reach!

FALLING FOR FALL

From fashion favorites to home decor, these fall trends are giving me chills.

It’s finally starting to feel like fall in LA and in addition to the sweaters I’m scooping up for the season, I’m loving a lot of the current trends that work with personal style and in home decor.  Fall trends are teeming with luxury -- from rich fabrics to saturated jewel tones to opulent hardware -- and I’m breaking down a few of my favorites wardrobe and interior styles for the season.

Cashmere

One of my favorite fall fabrics is a soft and supple cashmere because it’s as cozy as it is chic. This season, I’m excited to envelope my skin in this luxe Balenciaga cashmere scarf and, of course, endless oversized sweaters. And, for the home, this Quinn modern stripe cashmere throw is ultimate seasonal touch to stay warm.

Gold

Metallic accents continue to be pervasive in both fashion and design. Gold is especially timeless, whether a lurex thread woven through a party dress, hardware embellishment on accessories, or used as an accent in the home through a vase or a lamp. I’m loving the brushed gold hardware on Dior’s J’adior bag and, for the home, Tom Dixon’s ‘Gem’ collection.

Leather

I’m constantly looking for fresh ways to integrate leather into my wardrobe. These Saint Laurent over-the-knee boots are sure to give me a stylish swag this season. And, though it’s unconventional, leather can be a novel way to update a living space. Organizational items, desk accessories and place settings can deliver a dose of elegant edge. I’m a sucker for this Louis Vuitton tray and these Hermes cups!

Patterned Knits

With sweater weather fueling fall fashion, I’ve been thinking about how I can get my fill of patterned and embellished knits. For starters, Gucci sweaters are hot! Their chunky pullovers, boyfriend cardigans and elongating dusters are adorned with cute and kitschy patterns that add some whimsy to the wardrobe. For the home, adding thick throws and pretty knit pillows are a great way to integrate the trend. This plaid-patterned Missoni throw is the absolute prettiest accessory to Netflix and chill with through the cooler months.

Suede

Suede is a fall staple in both fashion and home decor, and there are plenty of new and noteworthy options this season. Chanel’s xx bag and Gucci’s Dionysus bag are two of the most covetable suede handbags to sport this season (and will last far beyond December!). And, for the home, I’m lusting over this CB2 woven camel suede chair, which offers a stylish space upgrade with a reasonable price tag.

Velvet

We’re seeing this luxurious and rich fabric everywhere right now. But, I’ll admit my favorite iteration this season is a colorful, tailored velvet pantsuit à la Cara Delevingne in this Mugler look. If you’re feeling bold, try this purple Pallas version with satin trim to make a statement at your holiday soiree. Bringing velvet into the home isn’t as tricky as you’d think. Perhaps the most eye-popping way is with a tufted velvet sofa. This elegant emerald one from Anthropologie is truly fit for royalty!

REFLECT YOUR STYLE

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the chicest of them all?

It’s no secret mirrors are a designer's go-to accessory. Not only do they make spaces appear larger, they add dimension and texture. If I can work a full-length mirror into a closet, I definitely will! While you may not have extra square footage for a full length mirror in your closet, there are plenty of areas around the home you can place one -- from the entryway to the dining room to the back of a door.

Here are a few of my favorite full length mirrors that not only help you ensure your outfit is on point, but also add a decorative design element.

mirror-300x450.jpg

Big Sur Mirror

Evoking the rugged California coast, this landscape-inspired mirror is made from recycled, reclaimed, repurposed materials. Great for nature-enthusiasts, I appreciate how it thoughtfully brings the outdoors inside.

Capra Mirror

Who doesn't love a little romance? You can channel a classic Italian aesthetic with modern flair by incorporating this arched mirror with pane detailing. The Capra is inspired by the 16th-century architect Andrea Palladio.

Gleaming Primrose Mirror

I’m often inspired by the nostalgia and charm of a Parisian atelier and this gorgeous ornate, gold frame mirror is a tres chic way to bring some opulent French flair into your space.

Herringbone Parsons Floor Mirror

A herringbone pattern is a playful and timeless way to add texture to any space. I adore the clean and modern white and gray colorway on this wood and bone inlay frame mirror.

Stepped Floor Mirror

This mirror makes a sleek, stylish statement, evoking the iconic Art Deco architecture of the 1920s and 30s. I love how simple, yet unexpectedly bold it is.

I am always on the hunt for new finds, so let me know your favorite mirror in the comments below!

DESIGNING FOR MILLENNIALS

As a part of this year's Fall Market Series at Pacific Design Center, I participated in an exciting discussion with fellow designers at the Kravet showroom! The topic: DESIGNING FOR MILLENNIALS

I think this generation of designers and dreamers are reshaping our field, fueled by a sense of creative freedom and embracing the endless possibilities! Here, I'm giving a full rundown of my responses to the panel questions.

What’s your number one piece of advice when it comes to work with/designing for millennials?

Have a strong social media presence and tools as this is how millenials are accessing information and inspiration from.

IMG_2570.jpg
IMG_2569.jpg
IMG_2568.jpg

What differences do you notice in their décor style in comparison to older generations?  I see the following difference:

PINK!  There is a willingness to mix and match hardware and fabrics/patterns whereas the older generations tend to want everything to match.

What challenges do you face when working with/designing for millennials?

Information is at their fingertips so there is a constant influx of ideas and often, I have to keep them focused and streamlined. They can also price things out faster than we can, so being transparent is key.

Have you encountered similar challenges with other age groups?

It depends on the person and the age group, but yes!

Does social media play a role in working with/designing for millennials? ABSOLUTELY!

Is designing an “Instagrammable” spot/corner a must?

Duh…J In Jessi Malay’s closet, this fact literally drove the design.  We created a staging area across from her vanity so it woud be in every shot and video she did.

IMG_4465.JPG
IMG_4468.JPG

What do you love about working with/designing for a younger generation?

I love the open mindedness and the thinking outside of the box aspect.  They don’t know the rules and it can be fun that way, too!

Are there any recurring millennial design trends that surprise you?

The marble trend!  Millenials are all about the marble—be it clothing, home décor, etc., which is surprising given that maybe 20 years ago, people saw marble as older/gaudy.

Are textures and patterns trending with millennials? In what ways?

I am seeing a lot of geometric patterns, florals, colors and textures.  Fashion also plays a part and I see that influencing design and design choices.

The closet, in the past was rarley featured and now an organized aethetically pleasing closet is a priority --- what do you think has contributing to this shift?

Where do I start?!  When I started LA Closet Design in 2007, the impetus was seeing ktichens as great spaces (heart of the home) and wanting closets to be treated in the same way—as legitimate spaces that people can dress in, as well as hang out in—multi-functional spaces.  It’s become a lifestyle space and thanks to social media, we’ve been able to show what you can do practically and aspirationally.

10 WEEKEND TRANSFORMATIONS

10 WEEKEND WARDROBE TRANSFORMATIONS

Recently, I teamed up with Partners' Trust to offer their readers 10 simple weekend wardrobe transformations! These are tips to streamline a closet on any budget, and can make a drastic impact in a small space, without the investment or time of a full closet overhaul

Check out my tips below, and see more over on the Partners Trust blog!

1. Install a towel bar to create a staging area where you can display pieces when assembling new looks or packing for a trip. This set-up works especially well for bloggers and avid instagrammers.

2. Install undermount hooks to hang larger tote bags and insert purse pillows inside of each one to help maintain their shape.

lhuillier.jpg

3. Use an extendable shower curtain rod in a cabinet to hang boots with boot trees. This will help keep taller boots organized while extending their life.

boots.jpg

4. Create a hanging jewelry panel by lining a wall or panel in your closet with felt or fabric, and installing hooks to hang your longer pieces.

jewelry.jpg

5. Add vinyl dry cleaning bags within your existing hamper to create separate sections for laundry, dry cleaning, and items to purge/donate.

hamper.jpg

6. Replace conventional hanging rods with battery-operated LED hanging rods to create a more boutique experience—as well as make the items in your closet more visible!

closetrod.jpg

7. Create a purse changing station by organizing a drawer with compartments for pens, wallets, gum, and lip gloss to make the changing process easier. For a real overhaul, run a power strip into the back of the drawer so you can charge your electronics while keeping them tucked away out of sight.

insert.jpg

8. Remove any odd hangers and/or change out all your hangers to be the same style and material—this is an easy upgrade that will instantly take your closet from drab to fab!

hangers.jpg

9. In a smaller space, use gallery ledges to store/display sunglasses, clutches and other small accessories. This will allow for easy access to your favorite pieces, without having them get lost in a deep drawer.

LAClosetDesign_GoreskiCloset-4175_Retouched_HR.jpg

10. Create a 3-way mirror by installing wall mirrors on a hinge. You can incorporate a hinge on the back of any basic wall mirror, and instantly create a custom dressing space.
