The Dream Doghouse
Inside a Montecito Guest House Reimagined for Man's Best Friend
There are luxury closets. There are luxury dressing rooms. And then there are projects that remind us that great design isn't really about the space at all—it's about the people (and sometimes the pets) who use it.
When a longtime Montecito client approached us with an unusual request—to transform an existing guest house into a dedicated suite for her beloved dogs—we couldn't resist.
What began as a secondary structure on the property was reimagined as something entirely unexpected: a custom canine cottage complete with a grooming spa, laundry facilities, organized storage, outdoor access, and even a private sleeping retreat. Because when dogs are family, they deserve more than a corner of the mudroom.
Designed Around Daily Rituals
The best spaces begin with understanding how life actually happens. Just as we design dressing rooms around morning routines and personal collections, this project was planned around the daily rhythms of pet ownership. Where are towels stored after bath time? How do leashes stay organized and accessible? How can laundry, grooming, feeding, and relaxation all happen seamlessly within one beautiful environment?
The answers became the blueprint for the entire suite.
A Boutique Wardrobe for Four-Legged Residents
One of our favorite features is the dedicated dog wardrobe. Custom brass hanging rods display miniature jackets, sweaters, rain gear, and special occasion attire, while illuminated shelving provides space for folded blankets, toys, grooming products, and everyday essentials. It's equal parts charming and functional.
Rather than hiding pet belongings away, the storage celebrates them—turning necessities into a thoughtfully curated display. After all, organization feels more effortless when every item has a designated home.
Storage That Works as Beautifully as It Looks
Anyone who shares their home with pets knows how quickly supplies accumulate. Leashes. Harnesses. Travel carriers. Grooming tools. Treats. Medications. Towels. Toys.
Without a system, these items inevitably spill into garages, laundry rooms, mudrooms, and closets throughout the house.
This suite centralizes everything in one location. Dedicated display walls keep collars and leashes visible and accessible. Custom cabinetry conceals less attractive necessities. Illuminated niches showcase travel carriers and specialty accessories while creating the feeling of a luxury boutique.
The result is a space that feels intentional rather than utilitarian.
The Grooming Spa
At the heart of the suite is a fully equipped grooming room. A custom bathing station, marble work surfaces, generous storage, and durable materials make routine grooming significantly easier while maintaining the elevated aesthetic found throughout the home.
But perhaps the most distinctive feature is the hand-painted blue landscape mural that wraps the walls. Inspired by traditional chinoiserie motifs, the mural transforms a practical workspace into something unexpectedly serene and whimsical. The effect feels more spa than utility room—an environment equally enjoyable for both pets and their owners.
A Laundry Room Designed for Pet Life
Pets create laundry. Lots of it.
Beds, blankets, towels, grooming linens, travel accessories, and muddy outdoor gear all require frequent washing. Rather than relying on the home's primary laundry room, this guest house includes dedicated laundry facilities designed specifically for pet care.
Integrated storage keeps supplies organized while marble countertops provide space for folding and sorting. Every detail was designed to simplify everyday maintenance without sacrificing beauty. Because practicality and luxury should never be mutually exclusive.
The Ultimate Nap Nook
Every great retreat needs a place to unwind. Tucked into a custom alcove, a deep blue velvet banquette creates the perfect canine lounge. Framed by soft lighting, integrated storage, and the same dreamy mural backdrop found throughout the suite, the space feels equal parts reading nook, daybed, and private sanctuary.
It's the kind of feature that makes visitors smile instantly.
Indoor-Outdoor Living, Canine Edition
Beyond the guest house, the dogs enjoy direct access to a dedicated outdoor area designed for fresh air, sunshine, and relaxation. Climbing vines soften the architecture while a covered porch provides shade and shelter throughout the day. Together, the indoor and outdoor spaces create a complete environment tailored specifically to their comfort and wellbeing.
Designing for the Whole Family
Luxury design is often associated with grand dressing rooms, wine cellars, and elaborate entertaining spaces. But sometimes the most meaningful projects are the most personal.
This Montecito canine cottage isn't simply a dog house. It's a reflection of the deep affection our client has for the animals that share her home and her life. And that's what great design ultimately does—it elevates the rituals, routines, and relationships that matter most. Even when those family members happen to have four legs.
