You’re Probably Storing Your Jewelry All Wrong
Our latest House Beautiful feature spills the (anti-tarnish) tea.
If your jewelry storage system is looking more “tangled heap in a makeup bag” than “curated display worthy of your collection,” you’re not alone—and House Beautiful just called it out.
We were thrilled to be featured in their latest article, “You're Storing Your Jewelry ALL Wrong”, where Lisa shares some of the biggest mistakes we see time and time again—and how to fix them beautifully.
From fine jewelry to the occasional Zara statement earring, your pieces deserve more than a dusty bowl or a crammed drawer. Not only is poor storage a visual mess, but it can also damage your pieces over time (yes, even the costume stuff).
Here’s a peek at what we shared:
💍 Give every piece a proper home
We always say: “If you wear it, it deserves a space.” Custom drawer inserts, velvet-lined dividers, and even shallow display drawers help keep everything visible and protected. Whether it's Cartier or Claire's, everything benefits from a little organization.
🔗 Keep your metals in their lane
One of the biggest mistakes? Tossing gold, silver, and costume jewelry into a single catch-all. Not only does it cause scratches and tangles, but it can actually speed up tarnishing. Store like with like—silver with silver, gold with gold—and keep costume jewelry separated from fine pieces.
🧊 Don’t store jewelry in the bathroom
We know it’s tempting, but humid environments (we’re looking at you, steamy showers) are not your jewelry’s friend. Costume jewelry especially can discolor or degrade. A cool, dry drawer is your best bet—and we often build in hidden compartments just for this purpose.
👀 Visibility = wearability
Out of sight, out of mind is very real. One of our favorite tricks? A vertical necklace pullout, so you can see every strand without the tangle. Or a glass-top drawer so your prettiest pieces double as display.
✨ When in doubt, go custom
If your collection has outgrown your jewelry box, it might be time to design something that actually works for your pieces and your routine. Most off-the-shelf organizers are one-size-fits-none—too many ring slots, not enough bracelet space, or no room for statement earrings. A custom solution gives everything its place.
