REACHING THE TOP

One of the biggest benefits to a custom-built closet is the ability to maximize your closet, regardless of the size or shape of the space!

While many clients struggle with a closet being too small, it’s almost just as common to encounter a closet that seems too tall to be functional! Clients come to us looking for solutions to make use of the upper out-of-reach spaces. Most standard cabinetry and closet systems stop short at a standard height, so usually this space is just an open void. Instead, we like To design custom millwork to utilize the full height of the room. Here, I want to share a few of my favorite ways to make use of these spaces, and hopefully offer some inspiration for anyone with a tall wardrobe!

Enclosed Upper Cabinets

One great way to utilize the upper areas of your closet, is to store away items that you don’t access often! This could include keepsakes, seasonal items, or even luggage. I often like to incorporate decorative enclosed cabinet doors above, which add visual interest to the design and help to draw the eye up, while keeping the closet looking tidy — no matter what you need to stash up top!

Lowering Rods

If you’re hoping to have the items at the top of your closet more readily accessible, a lowering hanging rod is a great solution! This allows you to utilize more of the space below for drawers and other storage where you can easily reach as well. Available in both manual and electrified variations, the pull-down rod is a great secret weapon for anyone fighting to get more hanging space in a tall closet!

Sliding Ladders

If you don’t mind a little exercise, a sliding library ladder can also help to make the most of your tall space! This way, you can continue the closet to the ceiling, and have a way to reach no matter where you store things at the top. Plus, it can be a beautiful design detail in the closet when done right!

Upper Display Shelves

If you prefer to keep the upper shelves of your closet open, I recommend using this area for displaying your favorite pieces! Merchandising and styling your favorite pieces, along with books and other decorative elements will go a long way in creating the boutique experience, and you’ll get to see your most prized pieces every time you enter the closet!

TOE-KICK LADDERS

When space is at a premium, and you want a solution that stows away completely out of sight, a toe-kick step stool can be a great option! It utilizes otherwise totally unused space, and can retract to completely disappear when not in use! I especially like these for smaller closet spaces, where a ladder might feel too clunky or intrusive.
