DESIGNER TIPS FROM THE BIG SCREEN
If you follow along on Instagram (which you should be!) you’ve probably seen all the fun closet stories we’ve shared in recent weeks, taking follower suggestions for the most fabulous closets from TV, movies, and even our favorite influencers! I was curious how and why certain closets catch our eye and become the benchmark for what a luxury walk-in should be. 20 years ago, many people saw closets merely as a place for us to store our clothes, but the dreamy spaces we see on the big screen have continued to shape our expectations of this space. Wall Street Journal recently featured us, calling closets the ‘ultimate status symbol’!… Increasingly, we see new luxury features and get glimpses into a new interior design style through the eyes of our favorite characters, and then we have to have it! These are some of the most-loved closets that clients and closet-lovers constantly reference, as well as a few takeaway tips to bring the signature style of each into your own home.
SEX AND THE CITY
Forever a classic, this is probably the number one most referenced closet of all time among our clients! Fashion-lovers were introduced to this dream closet on the hit show starring SJP, and for many, it still is unrivaled with its romantic and playful styling. The closet is a shared HIS/HERS walk-in, and just goes to show you don’t need massive separate spaces to create a beautiful closet. The contrasting materials between his side of the closet and hers give each their own individual style, and the functional valet rods scattered throughout the space make for the ultimate lived-in, yet luxurious look!
13 GOING ON 30
This closet makes a quick cameo in the Jennifer Garner comedy, but has made a major impact in the minds of viewers! Constantly referenced, it’s a classic design on a scale that feels familiar to many home-owners! Many viewers see this scene, and can imagine converting their own modest walk-ins to create a dramatic shoe display! Floor-to-ceiling and organized by color, the shoe wall is a closet must, and the angled display in this one makes the collection easy to admire.
SCREAM QUEENS
It’s easy to see why people dream about this closet — equally as dramatic as the plot line for Scream Queens, Chanel’s closet is a 2-story masterpiece! Even if you don’t have the luxury of a double height space, there are lots of tasteful takeaways you can incorporate in your closet for a more elevated look! If you have space for an island, that will instantly create a focal point for your closet. A chandelier is also a great way to dress up any size space! Even the pink satin hangers add to the overall feeling of an upscale boutique.
PARASITE
Perhaps one of the most highly-acclaimed movies of recent history, Parasite’s overall aesthetic was one of the best we’ve seen. Arguably deserving of its own Oscar, the closet is tastefully tailored to the movie’s mood. Warm wood tones and soft carpet keep the otherwise minimal space feeling comfortable. LED backlit bag displays and cove lighting give a dramatic designer touch, and a simple wall-mounted vanity with a table-top mirror looks like the perfect relaxing place to prepare for an evening dinner date.
50 SHADES OF GREY
Another commonly referenced closet, the 50 Shades series features separate his and hers dressing rooms that are equally aspirational. His, starkly modern with retail-style displays and LED backlighting, shows off the stylish collection of suiting better than many modern boutiques. Hers also takes some tips from designer retail spaces, with lighted rods and shoes displayed below the clothes throughout the closet. The soft area rug and seating area make this a space where we could lounge for hours!
CLUELESS
Although dated now, the technology in Cher’s Clueless closet was far ahead of its time! The smart-home world is still lacking when it comes to closet tech of this caliber, and we can’t wait for the day our closets will be able to style our looks by color and occasion. Seemingly modest, Cher’s closet has many tricks up its sleeve, showing her which items will work together, and displaying the selected pieces at the front for easy access!
CHARLIE’S ANGELS
A very special action-packed closet, the new Charlie’s Angels dressing room features retail-inspired displays for everything from techy weapons and accessories to colorful designer clothing! The hanging displays feature a staging area setup, with a shelf below for displaying shoes, and accompanying accessories above. This is something we love to incorporate in our closets for clients who plan their looks in advance or have new pieces coming in regularly!
CRAZY RICH ASIANS
Crazy Rich Asians featured some fabulous looks and aspirational design inspo! The closet in the movie is colorful and exciting, with hidden storage behind fabric-upholstered wall panels and gilded hanging displays. If you’re looking to recreate this layered look in your own closet, consider lining your cabinets in suede or another fashionable fabric. Don’t shy away from patterns and prints! Finish off the space with a beautiful velvet tufted ottoman — the perfect colorful closet accessory!
MTV CRIBS
Mariah Carey, although not a fictional TV character, is a larger-than-life personality with a larger-than-life closet to match! Featured in her iconic episode of MTV Cribs, this was the first celebrity walk-in many of us saw on our screens! While the oversized space definitely left us drooling, it was really her beautiful collection of bags and shoes that stuck with viewers. The closet features a shoe wall, chandelier, and double-sided aisles of clothing — these are a great way to really maximize the real estate in your closet if you’re thinking of remodeling a large space or converting a spare bedroom for more storage!
THE GREAT GATSBY
This closet takes the idea of the master suite and turns it on its head! Jay Gatsby’s two story retreat doesn’t fuss around with fitting a master closet into the bedroom, but rather puts the bedroom in the closet! With a second-story catwalk and luxurious art-deco finishes, Gatsby’s closet is the perfect bespoke space for an eligible, well-dressed bachelor. The shirting displays and wall-mounted staging areas are great ways to display menswear and accessories in a tasteful and tailored way!
