‘Black-Tie' Takes on New Meaning at The Golden Globes
Sunday’s Golden Globes red carpet was far from, well, red! In a first-ever award show “blackout,” stars traded in bold-hued ball gowns and fiery-colored fitted frocks in favor of black looks as a sartorial protest to bring awareness to workplace harassment, discrimination and inequality. Women (and men) chose to stand up and dress in solidarity rather than stand out on this year’s Golden Globes red carpet, igniting an important conversation and bringing awareness to Time’s Up. As a woman-owned business and someone who works closely with other female professionals, it’s inspiring to see this united and intrepid approach to women's empowerment.
Though black can be considered unimaginative, mundane or overtly masculine, black to me -- especially in the way it was harnessed last night -- shows strength, power and camaraderie. And, above all, in solidarity, black can be decidedly feminine.
Though last night’s carpet wasn’t about what stars were wearing, but rather why they were wearing black, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite looks. So many stars looked stunning, and as a collective group draped in black, they were even more exquisite. But, Sarah Jessica Parker in Dolce & Gabbana, Kendall Jenner in Giambattista Valli, Alicia Vikander and Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton, Diane Kruger in Prada, and Margot Robbie and Dakota Johnson, both in Gucci, all commanded the carpet. A few couples and duos who dominated their black ensembles were Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, both in Dior Haute Couture, Armie Hammer (in Giorgio Armani) and Elizabeth Chambers (in Alexandre Vauthier), and Dave Franco (in Saint Laurent) and James Franco (in Salvatore Ferragamo).
In the spirit of celebrating black as a feminine shade and powerful symbol, I thought I’d share a few examples of beautiful black design pieces, which also convey this poignant use of color. 2018 seems like the perfect moment to rethink our assumptions, and with that, I think last night's red carpet goes to show that black is the new black!
