DESIGNING FOR 2018
New Year, New Design Trends
This year brought us plenty of fun design trends -- from millennial pink to global Gucci domination and velvet everything. So, what does 2018 have in store? We know the Pantone “Color of the Year” is ultraviolet, so expect purple to be pervasive in fashion and home design. Beyond the hot hue, there are several other design trends we can expect. Here are a few of the ones I’m most excited about:
Nordic Knows Best -- Scandinavian-inspired designs offer a quiet respite and represent the bridge between ultimate efficiency and luxury. Expect to see streamlined sophistication (think solid monochromatic rooms, storage as decor and light wood materials).
Pattern Play -- Patterns and rich textures in a range of color schemes -- from soft neutrals to bold shades -- will bring more dimension and whimsy to fashion and interior spaces.
Shared Closets -- As fashion moves toward embracing unisex sensibilities, so do closet spaces. With streamlined design elements, an overlap of masculine and feminine aesthetics and simple, natural finishes, couples can comfortably share a space without sacrificing personal style.
Space Remix -- With more millennials entering the housing market, homes will become more flexible and multi-functional, challenging the conventional notion of “rooms.” We will continue to see spaces, along with closets, adapt to this more informal, multi-use lifestyle.
Staging Areas -- As social media becomes an increasingly present part of our style choices, staging areas need to not only function well for creating looks, but must also serve as beautifully designed spaces to showcase new looks (#OOTD).
